For years, I didn’t realize there was a name for the deep discomfort we feel within us at times. This unsettling feeling, known as anxiety, is a like shadow that blankets the light in our inward being. It’s incredibly layered, so foul a presence it has, one could argue bears a flavor. This immaterial haze can have a catastrophic affect on many, affecting us all differently of course.
I’ve made a piece about anxiety entitled “Merimna.” In that painting I explored the possibilities of how it might look to be anxious, or as it translates, “scattered.” Like many of my paintings, I’m always searching for the deeper meaning behind things, ‘The Nuclear Posture’ was my attempt at distilling something we find ourselves having a hard time articulating.
